Multimedia broken down into its root words simply means, "multiple" "media". From my own pedagogical viewpoint, multimedia is incorporating diverse forms of communication in order to express information. These various forms of communication can be a composite of one or more of the following: text, images, audio and video.
I believe that the integration of multimedia is now crucial in education as our world is rapidly expanding through technology and its applications. Information can be processed on a much deeper level when we can provide a learning experience that engages more of our students perceptions and sensations through interaction with course material, which multimedia can more efficiently and effectively provide. Using multimedia can also provide a more interactive and exciting learning experience, thereby, allowing the students to give more meaning to the concepts which helps increase interest, understanding and application of the course material.
One of my professional goals is to take my psychology lectures and create a multimedia presentation that can be experienced in my online classrooms. I would also like to create interactive tutorials to demonstrate technical Photoshop skills, as well as presentations on the importance of developing visual literacy skills and utilizing the principles of design and composition in my photography courses. Because photography's end product is a form of visual communication, utilizing multimedia is not only an obvious tool, but a necessary one. It is important for me as an instructor to teach students how to more effectively communicate through the creation of their photographs, which encompasses the use of multimedia. Because psychology is the study of human behavior and the brain's mental processes, it is important that I provide a multimedia experience for students that mimics a more "life-like" experience.
As I reflect on the use of multimedia in education, this image expresses an important educational philosophy of mine. That is, that the use of multimedia in education helps generate a synthesis of ideas, allowing our students to further develop their ideas and aquire more knowledge, thereby expanding their minds.
