The personalization principle is an extremely important aspect, especially in online learning. When the instructor has a more visible personal presence through voice quality (i.e. the use of conversational style language, polite speech, and self-revealing statements), and through the use of on-screen visible agents (i.e. cartoon characters, avatars, coaches etc.), research shows these types of presentations to be more effective and improve learning. Evidence demonstrates that the use of the personalization principle in e-learning helps create a social presence through a conversational partnership between instructor and learner, rather than the learner being just the receiver of information. It has also been proven that this way of exchanging information increases a learner's motivation because the learner will try harder to understand what is being presented when they feel they are a part of a conversation, thereby engaging them in deeper cognitive processing. Of course, an instructor must be careful to not over use the personalization principle, which can have a counter effect that can be unprofessional and lead to distraction. Through this course, I have experienced as a student, the importance of the personalization principle.
Presentations can be personalized and an instructor's visible presence can be created through the use of Web 2.0 tools. Web 2.0 tools are very new and exciting to me! Through this course I have learned about several Web 2.0 tools and applications as a means to help me create more personalized content to my online and classroom courses. This will help motivate students learning and engage them more in the course material. Not only do I plan on using many of these tools (Voki, Museum Box, TimeToast and Go!Animate) in my teaching, but I also plan to have my students use them to create their own effective personalized presentations.
