Reflection Paper- Education and Technology
Technology is evolving at a rapid pace becoming an immense part of our everyday lives, and it is especially becoming an important and integral part of education. In the 21st century, our students expect that technology be incorporated in the learning process, to communicate, inform and inspire. I have been a college instructor for 11 years with specialties in the department of photography and psychology. After taking this course, I now more than ever consider myself not just a professional and instructor, but also an educator. I teach, I learn. I learn, I teach.
Through all the rich information presented in this course, the most important aspect I have learned is the impact of the theory and practice of utilizing effective technology and multimedia in education as a way to enhance students learning. My experiences in this course first impacted my thoughts on how to create an effective and efficient learning environment, which has ultimately changed my teaching methodology and strategies on how to use technology in the classroom and online. Second, my experiences through designing and producing all the multimedia projects in this course has allowed me to develop new technological skills necessary to create meaningful and effective multimedia presentations that will be an integral part of my course instruction.
During this course, Multimedia for Online Teaching, I had the opportunity to develop my own online portfolio that demonstrates the new knowledge and skills I have gained over the 8-week course. During this time, I learned many new tools that allowed me to produce audio and visual learning materials. I also learned how to create multimedia projects in the form of slide presentations, podcasts, screencasts and more. Many of the projects I have created I have already implemented in either my face-to-face and/or online classes. I definitely plan on creating more multimedia instructional presentations for my future courses. Equally as important, this course has opened up my thoughts on incorporating these multimedia tools into my course assignments so my students can benefit from learning how to use this technology as well.
While the use of multimedia tools can help engage students in the learning processes, in order for information to be processed on a deeper cognitive level, I have learned that multimedia has to follow best practices and the basic elements of design to create an effective and efficient presentation that will enhance student learning. Through our readings, research, and projects we learned how to create meaningful presentations by incorporating the principles of Multi-media, Coherence, Contiguity, Modality, Redundancy and Personalization. Keeping a personal Blog on our Weebly portfolio site has allowed us and will continue to allow us to reflect on all the tools, technology, and teachings.
Without a doubt multimedia can provide a more interactive and exciting learning experience. This allows students to give more meaning to the course concepts, which helps increase interest, understanding and application of the course material. I believe applying my new knowledge and my new multimedia skills into my teaching strategies and methodology; I will be an even more effective teacher by connecting with my students through 21st century technology.
